The Practice of Noble Silence

Noble Silence comes from the Buddhist tradition, and may be recognised as a practice of deep and quiet contemplation by choosing to not speak, communicate, read or write for an allocated period of time.

Noble Silence means silence of body, speech, and mind. Any form of communication with fellow student, whether by gestures, sign language, written notes and eye contact is discouraged while observing Noble Silence.

Those in silence may, however, speak with the teacher whenever necessary and they may approach the management with any problems related to food, accommodation and personal health, But even these contacts should be kept to a minimum. In addition, there will be allocated time slots for interviews with the teacher where retreatants are encouraged to share and discuss spiritual matters pertaining to the practice.

Noble Silence is observed in order to cultivate the feeling of working solo, rather than by being influenced or distracted by those around us.
